Why would you want to run your vehicle with low tire pressure? There are a couple of reasons. Decreasing the inflation pressure improves ride quality by making the tire softer. Under certain circumstances this may help improve traction a bit.
But lowering the pressure also reduces the tire's ability to carry weight and increases rolling resistance (which hurts fuel economy). The recommended inflation pressure can usually be found on a decal on a door jam of a car, or in the case of a motor home, behind the driver's seat on a sticker. Tires are designed to operate within a certain pressure reang to give the best combination of ride comfort, load carrying capacity and rolling resistance.
While increasing the tire inflation pressure also called psi, will reduce rolling resistance, and help your fuel mileage and increase the capacity of the weight you can carry, it also increases the harshness of the ride. Tire Maintenance -- Nitrogen

Have you thought about using nitrogen in your tires. Although nitrogen has been used for years in aircraft and race car tires, it has not been common for passenger vehicles, motorhomes, or recreational vehicles in general

In the long run, it could be a worthwhile investment for motorists. A nitrogen-filled tire is beneficial because it stays dry. The  fluctuation in tire pressure caused by temperature changes is less dramatic, and while it could help with fuel mileage, the big savings comes because tires last longer with nitrogen in them.

PressurePro Tire Pressure Monitor

With PressurePro I can monitor both the RV and the towed vehicle tires.

This 10 sensor PressurePro system can monitor just the RV, or just the towed vehicle, or both. Sensors can be added on to suit one's needs. Some cars already have another tire pressure monitoring system ("TPMS") on them, but PressurePro has the advantage of reading tire pressures from inside the motorhome while the car is being towed. PressurePro has a button on the Monitor that is labeled "F/B"--meaning Front or Back. with sensors on both the RV and the car, one might, on occasion, want to just drive the RV without the car, maybe to take to their RV Dealer for maintenance. The F/B button has 3 pushes to it: one push will turn off the lights on the Monitor for the car, temporarily stopping its scan of the car wheels; the second push will turn off the lights for the RV, temporarily stopping its scan of the RV; and the third push will connect the RV and car lights so the Monitor will scan the tire pressures on both vehicles.

PressurePro is versatile, in that one can take the Monitor from the RV, and plug it into the cigarette receptacle of the car, thus using it for a day trip or whenever the RV is not in use. The F/B button should be pressed until just the lights for the car are activated, so the Monitor will only be scanning for the tire pressures of the car.

The Sensors can also be taken off and put on any other vehicle, such as a truck/SUV and a boat trailer, horse trailer, etc. Putting them on another vehicle in their same respective locations (front left to front left, front right to front right etc.) will eliminate the need to reprogram the Monitor. However, it would only take a few minutes to reprogram if that is preferred.

Tire Blowout Safety Tips

Tire experts say keeping enough air in your tires is the bottom line in tire safety. Also, knowing how to handle your vehicle if you have a blow out can save your life!

Summer is the most dangerous time for tires. Hot weather and hot pavement are really hard on your tires. Underinflation also causes heat. Your tire stretches when it gets hotter, and is much more vulnerable. Because of the stretching that's involved in the heating of the tire, a dry cracked tire is going to give out easily in hot weather.

Making sure there is enough tread on your tires is important. Use the penny test. Get a penny, turn it upside down, and put it in between the tread. If you can see the top of Lincoln's head it is time to get new tires. If your car or recreational vehicle sits unused a lot, it could have checked sidewalls. Your tires may have plenty of tread and still need to be replaced. Check the sidewalls of your tires for cracks, checking, or bulges of any kind.

What do you do if you have a blow out?  Keep the wheel straight. When the tire goes flat suddenly the car is going to pull towards the lower tire and our first instinct is to yank it back. That's when the car gets out of control. You want to try and hold the wheel as straight as you can and just stop as smoothly as you can.

Get a good tire gauge and keep it in your vehicle. Underinflation is the number one cause of tire blowouts and tire failure. You should check your tire pressure at least once a month. I do mine every time I wash the car.

Here are some tips for driving if you do have a blowout:

Accelerate slightly.

Drive straight ahead.

Don't panic.

Be sure not to wiggle the steering wheel, hold it steady and straight

Brake gently, after you’ve slowed down to 30mph or lower, pull over to a safe spot.

Pressure Pro, Wireless Tire Pressure Monitor

Tire pressure -- Motorhome safety

Since we are buying a motorhome, let's look at the special tire needs of a recreational vehicle. Besides underinflation and over inflation, the biggest cause of tire failure on an RV is overloading. Over loading your RV not only adds to possible problems with tires, wheels, and springs, but also can contribute to brake failure, drivetrain failure, and wheel bearing failure. Besides that, an overloaded Motorhome or travel trailer uses more fuel, is harder to handle and can lead to driver fatigue. If any component were to fail, it could result in vehicle damage and possibly loss of vehicle control.Some states actually require some motorhomes and RV's to go across the Highway Patrol's weight scales. There are proper ways to weigh your rig to make sure you are not overloaded and determine the correct amount of tire pressure for your rig. We are buying a Mandalay Presidio Motorhome. It is 39 ft long and is on a Workhorse chassis. We are going to be learning a lot about loading it in the very near future.

Tire Pressure on My Car

2000 Suzuki Grand Vitara

I have been writing and researching about tire pressures for months now. I installed the PressurePro system on my Suzuki, so I could get familiar with it, and get ready to put it on our motorhome when we get it. Since I started using it, I am amazed at the fluctuation in tire pressures.

First, we live in Arizona, and I installed the PressurePro in August. I keep 33 psi in my tires, and for the first month I didn't see much change in the pressure. Our daytime temperatures were in the 110's and nighttime in the 90's. One morning in September, I went out to my car, and the lights were flashing and the alarm was going off on my monitor. The pressure in all of my tires had dropped to 27 psi overnight, just because the temperature had dropped into the 70's. I had no idea it would be that much difference. I should have had the tires aired up, but I wanted to see what would happen throughout the day. The outside temperature got to about 90 degrees, so I drove around for about 30 minutes and my pressures went up to 31 psi. That is a lot of difference! Imagine what it must do on a motorhome! Anyway, I waited until the next morning, when it was cold and the pressures were down again, and aired them back up to 33 psi.

We recently drove to Utah, and got up to 28 degrees in the morning! (We won't go back until spring), Again, the monitor was going crazy. Now I won't go anywhere without this thing. It is so easy to take from one car to the other, that we use it all the time.

Tire Maintenance - Alignment Motorhome or Towable

Be aware of tire problems, before you have a problem. Your recreational vehicle isn't that much different than your car. Misalignment of wheels in the front or rear can cause uneven and rapid treadwear and should be corrected by a tire dealer. Some vehicles, and those with independent rear suspension, require alignment of all four wheels. Have your alignment checked periodically as specified by the vehicles' owners manual or whenever you have an indication of trouble such as "pulling" or vibration.
Also have your tire balance checked periodically. An unbalanced tire and wheel assembly may result in irregular wear.If you are pulling a 5th Wheel or travel trailer, irregular wear could be a sign of a misaligned axle.

Tire Safety Tips

Tires are one of the most critical factors in safe RVing. Most tire failures are caused by overload or under inflation, be sure your tires are inflated in accordance with proper inflation pressures for the load you’re carrying.
