RV Roof Maintenance
Why do I put off roof maintenance on my motorhome? I don't like climbing the ladder and getting up on the roof. I don't mind it once I am up there, but I really don't like going from the ladder to the roof.
Once every 2 months, whether I like it or not, I inspect my roof. Our Presidio has a rubber roof, so that is what I am going to talk about. There are RVs with Aluminum, metal and fiberglass roofs, and the one thing they all have in common is that they need to be kept clean, and all the sealants around openings and seams need to be inspected often. I just resealed all around our roof with Dicor self leveling sealant. The front and rear caps were looking a little dried and cracked and I didn't want any water leaks in our motorhome.
Anyway, back to rubber roofs. Whether you have a motorhome, trailer, or fithwheel, your roof should be cleaned 3-4 times a year, and more often if it is stored or parked under trees.
Never use any product that contain petroleum solvents, harsh ingredients, or citrus ingredients on your rubber roof. These types of cleaners can permanently damage rubber or vinyl surfaces.
A mild soap and water, and a medium bristle brush should be used to clean the roof. There are several good rubber roof conditioners available at your RV part store. I like 303 Protectant because of its UV protection.
NOTE: Rubber roofs on Recreational Vehicles are a great product, but like everything else, they will last a lot longer with proper preventive maintenance
RV travel should be safe and fun.
